Neston 4-3 Liverpool Sefton Saturday 24th March 2007

Last game of the season thankfully ended in a win, but it could have been very differant. We went 2-0 down in the first twenty minutes but thankfully turned it round by half time and went in 2-2.

Some great play by Richard Leeman our Player of the Season in midfield and two goals from our Top Scorer of The Season George Roberts. Mike Lyness is improving with every game and got the winner and Scott Barry sneaked a goal earlier.

Keep fit over the summer and see you all on 13th May for the Dribble!

Neston 2-3 Preston Saturday 17th March 2007

At Calday for a 12 o clock start, with a quite chilly beginning but we all warmed up after the first 10 minutes due to great effort and excellent passing of the ball. We then had a good chance with Chrissie Hall at top D to hit it superbly into the bottom corner! Great play.

All of a sudden they kicked into gear and got two quick goals just like last time! When we broke and should have had the decision when their defender struck the ball into Ben Creendon's shin pad which of course was lifted and it rebound to Robbo who tucked it away, we were all a bit confused, but we were not really going to argue and get sent off !!

The first half ended 1-2 against us.

After an inspiring team talk by the one and only Tony Bush the lads were up for it and gave the opposition a thrashing with Robbo wasting some good chances to then score a cheeky little reverse hit past the keeper!

We then created more and more chances but unfortunately couldn't put them away, unlucky to all, but a great overall game with lots of team spirit and a super end to the year!

Thank you Tony and Roy for helping on the sidelines and to all parents who cheered us on.

THANK YOU IT HAS BEEN A GREAT AND I MEAN GREAT SEASON!

Winnington Park 1-0 Neston 10th March 2007

The sun shone as we left Willaston after a small calamity with Goal Keepers kit, thankfully Tony Bush has now got some sort of "Sat Nav" system, which means the convoy didn't get lost and arrived on time.

We lacked some fire power up front with Andy and James Knight unavailable. But we had a good defence and midfield. Josh Eaton and Max Eastwood had a great game in defence. Callum Boothroyd and Richard Leeman were very busy in the midfield. George Roberts, Ben Creedon and Nick Milosovic did well up front. They kept us in our half for the first 20 minutes and only managed a couple of attacks. We improved for the last 10 or 15 minutes and went into the interval 0-0 which was good for us as they seemed to have most of the chances.

We wanted to try and keep the momentum of the last 15 minutes of the first half and we did well, passing to each other well and dealing with some pedantic umpiring, the umpire holding the flow of the game up by insisting on precise positioning of the ball for 16's and free hits. A couple of loose comments from Richard Leeman meant he got a green card for back chat! He held it well and took it on the chin, if anything it inspired him to try and work harder.

Unfortunately we gave away a silly goal in open play and lost a little concentration. What happened next was unfortunate and we need to learn from this and not dwell on it with a negative attitude.

The umpire had been incredibly officious like umpires can be, he was pedantic slowing the game down, not letting us play a quick ball, like the umpires can be. Unfortunately a comment from Richard Leeman to Tom McCurdy, reminding Tom to be precise with ball placement for a free hit, was taken as being a little sarcastic, by the Umpire who was within ear shot. A yellow card was given and to be fair Richard took it well walking off with out too much complaint, as he left most of the complaints to his Father, who was naturally concerned about the decision!

The whistle went very shortly after this and the game came to an end!

We are going to come across officious and pedantic umpires in the future and if we can all learn to tolerate them after today's incident it will have all been worth while. Especially if anyone was watching the 1/4 Final of The HA Vase on Sunday. Two of Tring's players got sent off for backchat to the umpire and that basically lost them the game! Being sent off means your team is down to ten men or in Trings case nine! Rembember that, and it will have all been worth while.

Neston 4-1 Alderley Edge 3rd March 2007

We arrived at Calday with what seemed to be a huge squad of 19 lads rearing to go. Nick and Jack made an appearance we dot see to often as well as the other newcomer Mike Lyness. Richard Capes also on the team list after moving up from beaver hockey.

The 2 keepers were great and made good saves to stop the Edge Hogs from scoring too often, great performance Warby and Charles Mc!

The skipper MCcurdy at central defence held the line and putting in strong tackles with Max Eastwood and Josh Lindsay having a cracking math just watch out for those stick tackles were we conceded a few unnecessary short corners 1 which we conceded from!.
the sub defenders all got on the pitch and held it strong with the confusion of so many people rushing around in defence , keep it up.

The new players who don't make to many appearances did there jobs by holding and giving the ball off well, good games just we would love to see more of you jack and nick.Richard Fennah was immense scoring a rare but well placed push into the keepers near post GOAL. we had pushed and pushed and in the second half we got another with Richard Leeman scoring a nice shot from a well worked short corner 2-0 which was ruined by a great run by an opposition player went through to score 2-1.things were tight and we needed another goal to seal the victory which came after 5 to 10 mins when Robbo took it around the defender to go one on one with the keeper which he put away 3-1 Things were almost most up when cheeky Leeman scored another goal but from top D .

It was all over a great team effort was seen by everyone and hope to carry it on to future games. Thanks again to Tony and Roy for helping on the sides and umpiring and to all parents that came to cheer us on.

GOALS = Fennah , Leeman x 2 ,Robbo

Neston 3-0 Southport 24th February 2007

We arrived at Caldy for a 12:00 start which all went to plan. Everyone was up for this one as we had a close call last time, letting 3 silly goals in, very near the end!

GOAL: Chris "Warby" Warbrick was a brick in goal and had a clean sheet, he kindly gave his knowledge to young Charles McCulloch, who is a great prospect.

DEFENCE: With Tom MCcurdy and Josh Lindsay at the back and Danny Tolley and Max Eastwood holding it strong, they had no chance of even getting close really. Tom was showing off some nice skills but said " i am playing really bad" no one else in the team thought that, just be positive!.Josh Linsday on the return after playing some higher level hockey was up for it and he proved that with some great tackles and hits up the field. Danny Tolley was superb with this only his 2nd match and was almost unbeatable well played! I have noticed a huge improvement in one man, that is the one and only Maxxy Eastwood, outstanding great performance keep it up. Josh Eaton also played well and I think settled in to his defencive role very well, putting in some fab tackles. One of our Beavers, Richard Capes came up for his debut and did very well.

MIDFIELD:With Rich Fennah having good performances week in and week out we could expect no less than we got, keep up the great work! He is strong and never scared to tackle people, Robby Bez was there to pass down the line on the right, keep doing that, its excellent. Then in the middle of the park were two great players Lemon and Knighty dribbling through people, but one down side they could have passed just a tiny bit sooner to release the strikers but overall a good game. with Ben Creedster running down the line and hitting in we had many a chance, well done.

STRIKERS: Robbo and Hally upfront getting involved we had many a chance. Robbo collected a pass from Knighty to take it past a few players and put a ball in the D to the Lemon to tap in. Robbo was on fire and set up James knight to have a shot from top D and put it away. The match seemed to be over after the two early goals from Lemon and Knighty but no, Robbo on his Birthday scored a nice goal after a beautiful one two with Hally just to nick it around the keeper like we have seen him do before.!

FINAL SCORE : 3-0

Thank you Tony for organising this and thank you for umpiring Roy
i have left man of the match to you Tony !

Neston 2-7 Deeside Saturday 17th February 2007

It began with 10 v 10 and we lent Mike Lyness making his debut for Deeside and Neston all on the same day! What a debut, he scored with pretty much his first touch, the Lyness touch! We managed to get something back with two fine short corners, Tom McCurdy and Chris Hall getting on the score sheets.

Half time came and we put Richard Fennah onto the Deeside side and that seemed to clinch it for Deeside as they went from strength to strength, Arthur Bush went off injured and we were down to nine! They came at us strongly and their quality showed thru, a couple of there side are North West trialists and play for Cheshire, but then we had a couple of North West trialists and Wirral players.

We let six goals in in the second half! We look forward to giving them a fair game next season?

Bolton 0-2 Neston Saturday 27th January 2007

Today was a great game, we left Willaston later than anticipated, but still made Bolton in good time. After a long journey, we were all psyced and rearing to go. Unfortunately we found that the pitch was not a great one, but that didn't dampen our spirits. We walked onto the pitch with a really positive attitude.

I must say that today could have been one of the best games all season as a team on the whole.
The defence was very well composed, communicating to each other, not allowing an attacker beind, Max E was superb, as always, covering as a last man. Arthur B was great aswell, especially as he was out of position as a right back. He was always there as an option and made some fantastic tackles. Calum B did well at the back aswell. Tom M had some interceptions and planted a few balls into the D. The defence were good as they moved the game forward.

The midfield were great too, Tom Mothersdale played a great game, he managed to be everywhere, marked up well as a defensive role and moved the game forward with the defence. On the right was Matt W, he had a great game aswell, his little passes down the wing caused havoc for Bolton's left backs. Rob B was also on the right for the second half. He again had a great game, causing trouble for the defence and laying some great balls into the middle. That was were Rich L came into the equation, all game he was playing in the centre of midfield, playing balls to the left and right wings, well played. Chris H started on the left of midfield and was a great outlet for balls into Rich L and George R. Richard F played a stormer, in my opinion it was his best game all season, well played.

The attack played well as part of the whole team and as part of their own, they were very composed and communicated well. George R was great today, had some good runs down the wings and played some fantastic balls into large spaces. Matty H had a good game to, scoring our first goal, it was a great one touch slap hit, after a fantastic pass from George R, well played Matty, you took it really well !!! Ben C had a good game in the top left, moving around for Richard F. Josh E was good today, with his prime objective of moving the Bolton defence out of the way and scoring goals. Well done Josh, you did that well. The last goal came from Richard L, it wasn't long after he took a hard blow to the stomach from a Bolton stick, well done for being a real sportsman Rich and retalliating with a goal!

James Knight had a nice game in goal today, he concentrated very well and made some great saves. Even though he didn't have much to do he always spoke to the defence, letting them know about positioning, nice one James.

The whole team gelled together extremely well and it was shown today. Well done Neston.

Thankyou to Roy for umpiring and Tony for organising the match.
Thanks to all who drove to Bolton.

Neston 4-2 Northern Saturday 20th January 2007

We arrived to find that the pitch door was locked and no key which meant very little practice at the beginning we only had about five minutes. Last time we met Northern we just about beat them with a last minute goal.

THE DEFENCE: with Max Eastwood, Tom McCurdy, Josh Lindsay, Richard Fennah and Warbby in goal. They all played very well and kept the side in it , the team went sloppy near the end of the first half and conceded a silly goal. Tom McCurdy tried a very good flick off a short corner unlucky. And Josh Lindsay literally barging one of their players over (well played).

THE MIDFIELD: A very good partnership in the middle of the park with Harry and Arthur Bush holding it, giving great balls off off to the forwards. Also Richard Leeman on the left had a cracking game with some great runs he was then moved to the right and Chris Hall took over and did very well to but was not given the chance for a shot but well played. Matty Hammond put a tremendous effort in but with some very funny miss hits, he got the man of the match award.

THE ATTACKERS: Robbo and Andy K were both on good form. The first came quickly from a pass into the D from Robbo to be tapped in by Andy, only for the second to come 3 minutes later and Robbo just moved out of the keeper and tapped it from the top of the D. 2:1. The second half went well with some amazing passing around the pitch using every bit of space we could. Another goal came a similar routine to the first pass from Robbo , Andy K tap in for a well worked goal. Then Richard Leeman out of nowhere came and scored a beautiful slap shot from the top of the D perfect.

The final score was 4:2. An overall good performance and some great coaching from Colin Leeman THANK YOU again.

Preston 6-1 Neston 13th January 2007
By Badger Hockey Correspondant George Roberts

We arrived after at least an 1 hour 15 mins following Tonys directions that lead us to chav city, but it was fun anyway. We did some streches went on to the pitch ready to play a good game of hockey to find we were 1 minute away from getting thrown off. We then journeyed again into the unknown to go to nearest astro pitch which was 15 minutes away.

The match was delayed even later we had to wait for the match to finish before us. So 2 hours into this expedition WE STARTED in horrible soggy conditions . We got off to a great start when Richard Leeman put one away niclely 1:0, but all of a sudden BANG BANG BANG ! We concedied 3 goals in a very short time, luckily we were saved the whisltleblew for half time 3:1.

Second half took off and 10 minutes in we hardly touched the ball but the another quick fire from the older preston side took 2 goals away 5:1.we were hedding for trouble . We held it till the last 10 minutes when they scored again, 6:1.

They were nice lads and gave us a gorgous pie with beans and new potatoes. We got beat by a very good and slightly older side who had only lost the once. Thank you Colin Leeman and Mike McCurdy for letting us play full time and give up your time.

MAN OF THE MATCH : Richard Leeman

GOAL: Richard Leeman

Preston 6-1 Neston 13th January 2007

Well if all the daft things happen on one day, then this was it. We left Tom Mothersdale at home, not a bad one to miss Tom, huge apologies again.

Tony Bush navigation was on the blink again, incredible patience was shown by Colin Leeman and Mike McCurdy for following the Green Multipla around the outskirts of Preston for what seemed like an eternity but hopefully was only about fifteen minutes.

I needn't have worried as the pitch was double booked by Preston and we were offered 4.30 at their club. After some deliberation we decided we had come this far, so we might as well do it. Original push back was 3.30 so not a bad delay. But of course the match before us on the astro was running late and we didn't get started till 5.00pm, rain and wind at 45 degrees.

We started incredibly well after a concentration session in the changing rooms, we went 1-0 up and gave them a shock. Richard Leeman made a weaving run through their mid-field and a fantastic goal. Richard did well in midfield and could find this is his position.

Preston came back at us and slowly showed their experience, they had an older set of Badgers and they knocked three past us by half time. Chris Warbrick did well again and kept us in it.

The boys had a golden patch in the second half with 100% effort coming out of everybody and the backroom staff of Colin Leeman and Mike McCurdy were impressed. Sadly no goals came and they produced some more goals, they could have done better but Tom McCurdy and Josh Lindsay did well.

Well done everybody, an experience that hopefully we can all learn from.

Goal: Richard Leeman

Man of the match: Chris Warbrick

Neston 1-4 Oxton 6th January 2007

We had a good start to the game and we took the lead through a Matty Hammond goal his first for Badgers this season. Unfortunately it all went a little pear shaped after that. They got a couple of good goals quite quickly and we went in to half time 2-1 down.

They improved and scored two more posibly because we left the back door open on occasions.

Not to worry on the positive side we had a young side who gained some experience against a strong Oxton side, most are in the Wirral Schools side.

Tom McCurdy played well at the back and Chris Warbrick was great in goal, it could have been worse without him, both deserve man of the match, but Chris edged it.

We need to look up when we pass and make a good pass once we have decided to whom we are going to pass to.

We can play better and we will.

Goal: Matty Hammond

Man of the match: Chris Warbrick

Northop Hall 1-4 Neston 16th December 2007

We played the side that we beat 10-0 two weeks ago, so we promoted some Beavers to the Badgers and I think they put in some of their 4th Team into their Badgers, so it was going to be an interesting game. We started slowly and they had attack after attack, which Chris Warbrick dealt with quite superbly, with some great saves.

We managed to get a Short Corner just before half time and George Roberts slotted it away, 1-0! We turned around and the boys were asked to keep things simple, posession and passing to Pink shirts.

They got one back to make it 1-1 but George Roberts found himself in the D with an acute angle, he shot and found the net, a fab goal, 2-1! Another Short Corner was awarded to us and George Robbo was on a hat-trick, he didn't need any encouragment and put it under the goal keepers foot 3-1.

There was a late goal from Harry Sanguinetti making his debut for the Badgers and what a start.
Richard Fennah enjoyed his central midfield role with Robbo and Nick Milosovic and Callum Boothroyd had a good partnership down the left. Josh Eaton did well in defence and Ben Creedon made some good runs up front!

Other debuts for Alex Greenhalf, Nick Milosovic, Greg Hughes and Scott Barry, all did well and we look forward to them coming back to Badger Hockey some time soon!

Goals: George Roberts x3, Harry Sanguinetti

Northern 2-3 Neston 9th December 2007

After a Magical Mystery Tour of Liverpool, getting to Litherland Sports Centre, thank you to Colin Leeman and Max Eastwood for helping the helpless lead car, we arrived at a state of the art sports complex with a fab water type based pitch. It was quick and slippy under foot, good shoes are essential, so with Father Christmas coming shortly, some boys need to put this item on their list! Available at Cains of Heswall upstairs, mention Neston Hockey Club, because they sponsored our Quiz Night!

We started slowly and made some poor tackles and poor passes but we some how managed to defend some good efforts from four particular older looking Badgers at least 16 year olds. That should not phase us now and we took advantage of one of our rare attacks, starting with Jack Rowlands in midfield and passing to George Roberts one touch pass to Richard Leeman who popped it away, fantastic goal and 1-0 up! We had a few changes at half time Ben Creedon, Chris Hall and Josh Eaton came on, they were asked to make a pass to Neston players and to tackle well and they did. Although we gave two goals away quite quickly and maybe that result would have been good, but no, the boys showed some character and passion. Matty Walker had a great chance gifted to him by George Roberts who's timed pass was brilliant but unfortunately Matt pushed it wide! He was gutted but never gave up and a second chance came and he had a more difficult chance that he reverse passed into the goal! 2-2 and Matt's first goal of the season, well done!

I would have been happy with a draw and was wishing Roy Rodger would blow, but the boys kept on pushing forward and some excellent work in midfield from Jack Rowlands linkng well with Richard Leeman gave George Roberts an open goal which he put away, 3-2 victory!

Some good play by Rob Beswick, Callum Boothroyd, Josh Lindsay and Chris Warbrick in goal, they all deserve a mention, but everyone played as a team, well played.

Man of the match: Jack Rowlands

Neston 10-0 Northop Hall 2nd December 2006

Well we had a miss match against Northop Hall and as a result we took some players off and put some on for experience in differant positions. We went 2-0 up within about as many minutes and the management decided that we needed to avoid a Paul Collingwood Cricket score line! Andy Knight scored a good goal, followed by Richard Leeman and Harry Bush. Andy and Harry came off and we put on Josh Eaton and Rob Beswick. George Roberts got a couple and Josh Eaton got on the score sheet for the first time and not happy with his first he popped up again for his second goal of the season! We took off Matty Walker towards the end of the first half and put on Ben Creedon for his Badger debut at right mid. Ben did really well and will hopefully have enjoyed his day, he will be an asset for the future!

Josh Lindsay got a short corner goal and another later in the second half. But we needed Tom McCurdy to get on the score sheet and a cunning plan was being hatched on the touchline by Mike McCurdy the Badger Tactician.

The plan was to switch Defenders and Attackers for the second half, Josh L, Tom Mc, and Callum upfront with Richard L, George Roberts and Josh E in defence. Was Tom Mc going to get his first goal of the season? Callum Boothroyd played well in defence and attack and deserves to be Man of the Match.

Well he left it to the last second and the last hit of the game and what a goal, a cracker, worth the wait Tom!

It will be tougher next week and thank you to all the players who didn't play much.

Goals: Andy Knight, Richard Leeman, Harry Bush, George Roberts x2, Josh Eaton x2, Josh Lindsay x2, Tom McCurdy.

Man of the match: Callum Boothroyd

Neston 1-6 Winnington Park 25th November 2006

We started the match with our backs against the wall, some of the players had been playing for school and came along late, not their fault. However we let an early goal in and I thought we where going to have a few more against us in the first half! However we held on and found there half and then ventured into their D, we got a short and managed to get some action. An Andy Knight effort late on in the first half brought us level for half time, 1-1.

We re-grouped and made some changes for the second half, we had a squad of 16, so some players hardly got a half, well done for being patient! Unfortunately they got stronger into the second half, maybe their four over aged players had longer legs, but we kept on trying and we never gave up. I was impressed with Max Eastwood and Callum Boothroyd at left back. Tom McCurdy is on fine form and made some great runs into their half and was trying some dinky compression passes, that worked well.

Other players that deserve mention are Tom Mothersdale, Andy Knight and Rich Leeman. Dan Power made some fine saves and kept the score line in single figures, thank the lord!

We lost but the score line doesn't represent our efforts and Chris Hall had a good chance near the end.

Team of 16: Rob Beswick, Tom McCurdy, Rich Fennah, Max Eastwood, Tom Mothersdale, Matty Hammond, Andy Knight, Josh Lindsay, Harry Bush, Dan Power(Goal), Callum Boothroyd, Josh Eaton, Chris Warbrick (Goal), Matt Walker, Chris Hall, Rich Leeman.

Neston VI Team 4 - 1 Neston Badgers Saturday 18th November 2006

We had a great game against our fabulous 6th Team, they had a few players playing up in the higher teams, but they had some good players, experience and youth blended well. They got off to a good start and had two quick goals within ten minutes. It took us a little time to tune into their pace , but we did have some good attacks and we earned a Short Corner. We figured we would use "The Blitz" at our first oppotunity under the alias of another name, we hit a foot (Josh L!) with the result another Shorty, Tom Mc called a conflab and very cleverly changed the name for the same routine, it fooled them and the result, a fab goal! 2-1!

We continued doing well but they caught us on the break a couple of times and the result was 4-1 at full time. We mixed it up after the game and changed the defence on each side which was a good chance to experiance each others attackers!

Most of us went down to the Club for a curry and a good day was had by all!

Well played and back to normal next week.

Neston 7-0 Bowdon 11th November 2006

We gathered at a windy Calday to play a slightly below par Bowdon. Who arrived with only ten boys, Josh Eaton gallantly volunteered to play a full game for Bowdon, thank you. We welcomed Jack Rowlands into the side, his first game of the season.

We had a strong side out and it took 10 minutes to give George Roberts a tap in for our first goal, 1-0. Andy Knight then had a flourish of chances and took them all, the first was a simple tap in but his second was a wonderful low backhand that hit the backboard with some force, 3-0. The team’s fourth goal went in after a kafuffle in the D, Andy Knight popped it in for his hat-trick, James Knight wanted to put a stick out for a touch to claim the goal, but brotherly love made him resist! Half time and 4-0 up!

We had a big squad and made some changes to bring on Rob Beswick having brought on James Knight and Matty Walker, just before half time.

It took a little time to settle in and Jack Rowlands moved into a central position for Arthur Bush, he took no time to assert his dominance and slotted a forehand drive into the backboard, 5-0. A shot from James Knight was stopped on the line by a foot, a Penalty Flick was awarded and Harry Bush stepped up and slipped it in, between the goalies legs, 6-0!

We made some more changes and George Roberts was released by James knight for a one on one with the goal-keeper, he took it round him and hit it into the backboard, 7-0!

The defensive team of Chris Warbrick, Josh Lindsay, Tom McCurdy and Max Eastwood all did well and held their urge to lose shape, with temptation to move forward ever present, Tom McCurdy made some great passes and moved forward at the correct times in the match, with Max covering at the back.

The team played well and I was pleased with our attitude and when asked to be substituted, there were no complaints!

Bramhall 2-5 Neston 4th November 2006

We arrived at Bramhall a little sleepy and had to quickly get mentally and physically into gear. We welcomed a new Goalie Chris Warbrick, who impressed us all with his quick movement off the line and agility in getting down onto the floor.

We started quickly with a Blitz Short Corner movement, that baffled the opposition, Rich Leeman hitting it sharply, 1-0, at 10 minutes into the game.

A stunning individual goal by James Knight passing one player outside the D and then another inside the D followed by a cracking shot, Neston was on the ascendancy, 2-0, at 15 mins into the game. We have been working on quick ball in practice and we had a number of long corners to try this out and while their defense was walking back and not ready, we hit a quick ball from the right found George Roberts who slotted it home, 3-0.

We turned around 3-0 up and made some changes bringing Josh Eaton and Rob Beswick on for a direct swap for Chris Hall and James Knight. It took a little time to settle into the second half and we let in a goal, 3-1. Arthur Bush came off and James Knight went into Central Midfield, Richard Fennah went off for a breather, after another good game on the left, Chris Hall came on at left Mid and did well. A kafuffle in the D gave George Roberts a chance and he took it, 4-1!
We let in another after a good effort from Chris in goal and they got the rebound, 4-2. Thankfully we had another chance up front and Richard Leeman took it well, 5-2 and we held on for a good win. Some good defensive work and I was impressed with Max Eastwood slotting into the back centrally when Tom Mc went up. keep it up!

Important Lessons:

1. We picked up possession from having a good wall at their Free Hits!
2. Discipline at all times, don't react.
3. Don't appeal for fouls on you; this is not done in Hockey.
4. We benefited from quick ball.

Neston 4 -1 Bolton 21st October 2006

We had big squad on the day, as some players became available last minute. We started reasonably well and worked well down the right side, Rob Beswick and Arthur Bush finding each other well. The defense did well with Tom McCurdy Josh Lindsay and new recruit Callum Boothroyd producing a good display, talking to each other well. Unfortunately we gave away a goal against the run of play with possibly the only mistake the defensive unit made all day, by being too high up the pitch, let’s learn from that!

It was another ten minutes before we had a chance to redress the balance, a short corner. The boys had been practicing a move called the blitz, a bluff pass to the center actually goes wide to Richard Leeman, he hits hard at the goal and it either goes in or is deflected by one of ours, it goes in hitting the backboard with some force, 1-1! We then had a run of play that we only dream of, Richard Leeman had a run down the left going past a couple of players into the D and pops it past the goalie like a Sunday afternoon training session, maybe they are paying off!! 2-1 and we have all the play, Andy Knight got the ball in the D and sweeps a reverse stick into the goal, 3-1.

Half time came and we re-grouped, as we had a few players, Josh Eaton went on for Chris Hall, both worked hard, running wide well drawing their defense out with them. Matty Hammond came on for Callum and did well, watch out the 6th Team. Matt Walker was patient waiting for his chance and came on for Harry Bush down the right. Richard Fennah had another great game on the left, finding good positions and his time came again with a deflection goal from a hit outside the D, 4-1. That’s how it remained, James Knight had another great game in goal, possibly his last as we have found a couple of replacements, which will mean he can go out, watch out everybody!

Oxton 1-3 Neston 14th October 2006

On a glorious autumnal day at Birkenhead Girls School, the Neston Badgers played our local neighbors Oxton Hockey Club. We tried a new system of 3,4,3. The first twenty minutes or so they put a lot of pressure on us, but the back three of Tom McCurdy, Max Eastwood and Josh Lindsay managed to absorb what they threw at us! We got our first short corner after 20 minutes and Josh Lindsay stepped up, Tom McCurdy did a great injection and Josh took his new driver out of his bag and hit it hard against the backboard, 1-0! A few minutes later Oxton scored a good goal, after James knight had made some fantastic clearances earlier.

Half time came, it was 1-1 at the turn! We re-grouped and managed to come out playing better hockey, linking better and pushing the ball to our player’s sticks! We were given a short corner after a lucky break in the D and Josh followed in his own short corner attempt and slotted home for his second of the match, 2-1!

A good move down the middle by Tom Mothersdale and Harry Bush then went left and our left midfield man Richard Fennah who had been finding some good positions found the Oxton Goal and sensibly pushed the ball into the backboard,3-1!
Richard Leeman, George Roberts, Josh Eaton and Chris Hall all played well up front and created space for the midfield to come through. Matt Walker worked hard down the right and then had 10 minutes up front and almost put his name on the board!

Things to remember for next week:-

1. Sticks on the ground at all times especially defending a free hit.

2. Quick free hits, especially when they are re-grouping after we have defended a short corner, their defenders may have been involved in their attacking short and so be out of position at the back!

3. A Ring should be formed at all of their free hits, three in a line, with two more behind them filling the gaps!

Man of the Match: Tom McCurdy

Goals: Josh Lindsay x 2, Richard Fennah

Team of 12: James Knight, Josh Lindsay(Capt), Tom McCurdy, Max Eastwood, Matt Walker, Harry Bush, Tom Mothersdale, Richard Fennah, Josh Eaton, George Roberts, Rich Leeman, Chris Hall

Deeside Ramblers 5-0 Neston 7th October 2006

We lost the first half 1-0 and could have gone in at the interval one up, we played well, linking well with each other, almost perfect hockey! They got a goal against the run of play, but things changed at half time, noticeably when they introduced an U15 boy who had been playing for their 4th Team, equivalent to our 3rd Team, who also plays for the North West of England! They continued playing well in the second half and went from strength to strength and scored some good goals with this North West player the main creator and scorer of their goals. We let in a soft fifth goal when our heads went down. I was impressed with Richard Fennah who never gave up and created good chances down the left, Arthur Bush and Tom Mothersdale worked hard as a new central midfield partnership. Andy Knight and Richard Leeman found each other well in the first half but were shut out in the second half. Max Eastwood and Matt Walker defended well and ran their socks off. Tom McCurdy did well for his first game back after an injury. Chris Hall, Rob Beswick and Josh Eaton came on as subs.
Well what can we learn?

1. They can dribble while moving forward with the ball at the end of their stick and look up!
2. They are fit and kept going to the end.
3.They had a good defense who kept a tight back three.

We had a good team but lacked Will and George Falck, Jack Phillips, Harry Bush, George Roberts, Jeremy Williams, Jack Rowland, Matty Hammond and Tom Smith. Our Goalie James Knight is a fab out field player and not a specialist goalie. What could we have done if we had played our strongest side, it was their strongest? I spoke with their Manager after the game, they played 4 North West players a Cheshire Goal Keeper and two or three other Cheshire players and a 15 year old! Well umpired Roy Rodger, welcome back into the Badger Set!

Man of the Match: Richard Fennah

Southport 3-4 Neston 30th September 2006

A good game with a story in each half! We could not have started better with a Short Corner in the first minute, Andy Knight slotted it home! 1-0. We dominated the first half with a good second goal from a good piece of pressure in their half, Jack Phillips put it away after some good work in midfield. 2-0! We continued the pressure with another midfielder getting up into the D, Arthur Bush gave it a smash from the edge of the D and whacked the backboard. 3-0 and half time arrived. Rob Beswick, Matty Walker and Max Eastwood came on for Matty Hammond, Harry Bush and Tom Mothersdale.

The second half started well and with a George Roberts skilful goal, against a nimble Lancashire Goalie! 4-0. But then we made a few more changes giving Josh Lindsay our right back and Captain a breather and things went a little pear shaped and we let them back in. They got one back from a kafuffle in the D and it was 4-1, but only 15 minutes left it wasn't time to panic. We re-introduced a few experienced players but out of position and unfortunately we lost some shape. They got two more goals from confusion in defense and suddenly it was 4-3 and 5 minutes left! We held our nerve for a close run victory and some lessons learnt.

Man of the match: Jack Phillips

Goals: Andy Knight, Jack Phillips, Arthur Bush and George Roberts

Neston 6-1 Bramhall 23rd September 2006

On a beautiful day at Calday Grange Ground, a beautiful game was played! Bramhall had two adults playing for them, depriving two of their Badgers an experience of a real game of hockey and I spotted one of their Badgers on the touch line, looking desperate for a game! Anyway there loss, not ours! We had played against some big adults at Leigh the week before so we were not going to be fazed by that! To begin with it was tough to get through and past there midfield, but eventually a kafuffle in the D gave George Roberts a shot and we had scored! 1-0. Later Richard Leeman had a shot from the top of the D with a deflection off a defenders arm into the goal! A Phil Connolly goal made it 3-0 at half time.

The manager asked the team for 3 more goals in the second half, to try and keep the pressure on, was he going to be given three more? Quite quickly a goal came from Phil Connolly before he was rested and Matty Hammond came on in central midfield after a first half on the right midfield, he did well! Jack Phillips had taken on the adult in midfield and won, Arthur Bush came on for Jack in the second half and hit the post. Two more goals came, Richard Leeman in open play and George Roberts from a good strike at a short corner! 6-0 and the three goals in the second half for the Manager!

They did get one from a kafuffle in our D, 6-1 final score! Special mention goes to Josh Lindsay who moved from right back to central defense for an injury to Tom McCurdy, Matty Walker came into the right back position and did well after a school match! Dan Power and Richard Fennah each took a half at left mid and did well! Max Eastwood did well at left back and Tom Mothersdale was all over the place from an official central defense role! Chris Hall came on in the second half on the right of midfield and did a lot of good work. Some fine decisive and assertive umpiring was on show from David Knight, more next week !

Man of the match: Richard Leeman

Leigh 4-4 Neston 16th September 2006

We turned up at Leigh with 13 players having driven for about an hour to find an opposition comprising only five adults. I think we made the best of a bad situation and donated two good players, Dan Power and Matty Hammond both played well in midfield! Three Dads and two girls Laura Hammond and her friend Abby! Steve Connolly and Warren Phillips have played themselves into selection for the 6th team! Dave knight needs to come to fitness on a Wednesday!

It ended 4-4 Goals from Phil Connolly PC, Jack Phillips, Andy Knight and George Roberts.

We will offer this fixture to the 6th Team next year as it is no advantage to us especially the travel and time given up I would prefer a Badger v Badger game!

Thank you to all the players and Parents for being so positive and I hope we can get back on track next week. The Silver Dollar Pub was worth it!

Bowdon 3-3 Neston 9th September 2006

A good result on the face of it, Bowdon traditionally are a good side and to have an away fixture as the first game and come away with a draw is good. But it could have been very different! We went 2-0 up within the first half which we deserved!

A great individual goal by Phil Connolly from a defensive midfield role, started things off, followed by an Andy Knight diving slide gave us a good start, but we knew we could not relax and we were right! Bowdon put on a couple of large Badgers that seemed familiar from the earlier 3rd team match that had just finished! It was quickly 2-1, then a dubious PF was awarded for two stick tackles one outside the D the other inside, apparently they were on purpose, if I was Umpiring it would have been a Short Corner as he played advantage on the first and then the second was in the D, so a short! Anyway I was pleased with the lads and they didn't put up too much of a fuss and took it on the chin. But then we went 3-2 down and we suddenly had our backs against the wall, Jeremy Williams came on again after a 10 min rest and more good play by Phil Connolly who ran his socks off, turned it around and we had more chances for Dan Power and Andy Knight up front. With 10 mins to go James Knight came on, with instructions to go on the left side of midfield although he took up a position on the right to begin with, only he knows why! But it must have tricked the opposition as he managed to eventually find the left side and knocked in a deflection off the goal-keeper from his brother Andy! 3-3 and we held on with some good defending from Josh Lindsay and Tom Mothersdale, also in defense Max Eastwood, Tom McCurdy and Matty Hammond.

Special mention has to be to Granny Helga, Andy and James's Grandmother, who had flown in especially from Peru to watch the match! She was spotted in the VIP seating area in the Main Stand, what a view she got watching her two grandsons play and both score! Helga is the reigning Seniors Fronton Champion of Peru ( A Goofy South American game with a paddle shaped Stick), possibly she has passed on something to Andy and James, which could explain a lot!
